History

Over 118 Years Weinhaus Stetter

In 1902, in the Metropolis of the Kingdom of Württemberg, the young cooper Ernst Stetter of Rosenstraße 32 opened his business in the historic “Bohnenviertel”. Next to the newly made and artistically decorated oak barrels and exisiting barrels needing repair and maintenance, Ernst Stetter operated a grape press in autumn.

From the profits, he bought grape must from local vineyard owners in Württemberg which he barreled himself. He supplied Stuttgart restaurants and pubs with the wine he matured in his extensive cellar in his hand-made barrels. Of course, his son named Ernst also learned the craft of coopering.

After his time as a Journeyman, Ernst junior returned home with his master’s certificate, a throughly strengthened understanding of wine , and a young woman from the Palatinate. In 1932 he arrived back in Stuttgart and took over the now well established and flourishing family business.

After the War

The property, which was partially destroyed in the bombings, was rebuilt. The barrels, however, were no longer in demand. The winegrowers’ cooperatives and wineries had switched to bottling their wine and now supplied the restaurants and pubs of Stuttgart directly.

Because a living could no longer be made as a master cooper, the Weinstube Stetter was opened in 1948. To this day, you can still drink wines in comfort by the “Viertele” (250 milliliters) from our extensive wine list before you commit yourself to buying a bottle. Lovers of traditional Swabian and Palatinate cuisine can dine here with great satisfaction.

Until December 31, 2008, the grandson of the company founder, Roman Stetter and his wife Gertrud, owned the “Weinhaus” and and further strengthened the wine shop and reputation of the wine bar, thereby establishing the name of Weinhaus Stetter far beyond the city limits of Stuttgart.

The Change in 2009

At Roman Stetter’s express request, wine enthusiast Andreas Scherle of Stuttgart’s traditional hotel and restaurant Zur Weinsteige took over Weinhaus Stetter in January 2009. Andreas Scherle comes from a hospitality family that has been committed to its guests for four generations.

Since the extensive kitchen renovations in 2009, our guests in the Weinstube have been able to enjoy classic house made Swabian specialties. In addition, you can treat yourself to incredible wines from our 500 bottle wine list spanning the world and a great many vintages.

Andreas Scherle has continuously developed the wine selection for the wine shop and Weinstube. The range has been expanded significantly, particularly in the area of German wines both regionally and nationally.

In 2016, the Weinstube was carefully renovated with the goal to maintain the traditional wine bar ambience. The wine shop was expanded to include a bar and bistro area in order to be able to host guided wine tasting for groups of up to 15 people.

As it has been for many decades, Weinhaus Stetter is the best location in Stuttgart for Swabian comfort and great wines.
